I can’t recommend Phil’s Workshop highly enough. Phil creates a great, fun and friendly environment and he gave us some priceless insights into his journey through the industry. He covers so many topics, from narrative to characters and dialogue, and the tips and suggestions he gives are invaluable. The 3 hours just seemed to fly by.

Phil’s workshops are dynamic, funny, and visually stimulating. Working with Phil gave our students the opportunity to develop their own creative ideas under his expert supervision in a highly interactive setting. We look forward to having him back at The Arden and I couldn’t recommend him more highly for anyone else considering these highly engaging workshops.

Director of Performing Arts and The Arden at UCEN Manchester

Great insight into Phil’s career and autobiography interspersed/punctuated with interesting facts, comedy moments and classics and character analysis. Delivered in a friendly personable manner, was humorous and inspirational but also professional. We were able to create our own characters with guidance from Phil who helped provide the stimuli. When we created our own material e.g., an intro to a script-or starter to a sketch, Phil was able to offer advice and support to further develop our ideas. As well as being an entertaining speaker he was also an encouraging mentor and adamant that anyone can do this.

I really enjoyed working in the comedy writing workshop as it showed me not to give up when you fail and if you keep trying, you’ll get success like winning a BAFTA

The session was really well presented to engage the students and inspire them through real life experience and stories. The students thoroughly enjoyed the time with Phil and learning about the process of writing comedy.

It was an absolute delight to have Phil come and talk to our students about his career and his experience in the media industry. Phil had so much good advice and knowledge to share and he does so in a way that is relatable and down to earth – and he’s also a bit funny as well! Phil was candid about the realities of working as a comedy writer and actor, which will be invaluable to our students, and they went away with many tips on how to get a break and sustain a career in the media industry.

Dr Tracy Crossley
Head of Performance at The University of Salford

Phil delivered a workshop on character development and narrative to our Year 12 Film Studies students. It was a really successful event and the students were creatively inspired, not just by the professional advice on screenwriting but by Phil sharing his experiences in the industry. Would definitely look to make this workshop a feature of our curriculum delivery! Excellent!
